What is a blockchain based academic credential verification system?

A blockchain based academic credential verification system is software infrastructure that issues academic credentials (degrees, diplomas, mark-sheets, certificates) as cryptographically signed digital records anchored on a public blockchain — and lets anyone verify those credentials, instantly, without contacting the issuing institution.

Gradify Labs operates such a system in India. Credentials are issued as W3C Verifiable Credentials, signed with Ed25519 keys, and anchored on Solana. Metadata lives on IPFS. Verification happens via a free public verifier in under 3 seconds — no account required. The system integrates natively with NAD, ABC, DigiLocker, and NAAC, and is already deployed at IIIT Surat.

Six pillars of the verification system

Tamper-evidence, instant verification, standards-based interop, privacy-preserving proofs, decentralised storage, AI fraud detection — all from one platform.

Tamper-evident on-chain anchoring

Every academic credential is signed with an Ed25519 key by the issuing institution and anchored on a public, permissionless blockchain. The record is immutable — any alteration produces a different cryptographic hash and verification fails immediately.

Sub-3-second verification

The free public verifier returns a tamper-evident result in under 3 seconds. No registrar call, no manual review, no platform login — anyone, anywhere can verify any credential issued on the system.

W3C Verifiable Credentials + DID

Each credential is a W3C VC 2.0 with a DID-based issuer identity. Globally interoperable. Compatible with any standards-compliant wallet, university portal, or government identity system.

Zero-Knowledge Proofs (ZK)

ZK / zkSNARK proofs allow employers to verify credential validity without exposing the holder's personal information — DPDP Act 2023 and GDPR compliant by design.

IPFS decentralised storage

Credential metadata lives on IPFS — a content-addressed, censorship-resistant network. Permanent preservation, independent of any single server, university, or vendor remaining online.

AI fraud detection

Machine-learning models continuously analyse verification patterns and issuer-behaviour signals — flagging fabricated credentials and anomalous activity in real time, before they reach hiring pipelines.

Built for Indian compliance

Every standard Indian universities are mandated to adopt — out of the box. Your registrar and IQAC teams don't manage three integrations.

The Process

From institution onboarding to instant verification

Four stages. Single API. Every Indian standard handled. Free verification for everyone, forever.

1

Institution Onboarding

Your university completes KYC and DID-based identity attestation. The institution's signing key is provisioned in a hardware-backed key management system. NAD and DigiLocker onboarding handled in parallel.

2

Bulk Credential Issuance

Degrees, diplomas, mark-sheets, and micro-credentials are minted as W3C Verifiable Credentials via CSV upload or direct API. Metadata is pinned to IPFS; the on-chain anchor is published with a single transaction per batch.

3

Automatic Government Push

Each issuance simultaneously updates NAD, posts the credit transaction to ABC, and makes the credential available in DigiLocker — from one issuance event. Registrar teams don't manage three integrations.

4

Independent Verification

Employers, embassies, BGV firms, foreign universities — anyone — verifies the credential against the public chain in under 3 seconds via the free verifier. No login. No platform account. No registrar phone call.

Traditional verification vs Gradify

Most academic credential verification in India still runs on registrar phone calls and ₹2,500 BGV vendor invoices. The economics no longer make sense at the volume India produces.

Who the system is for

Universities & Institutions

Cut registrar workload by 60–80% on common verification queries. Get audit-ready NAAC evidence. Issue at convocation scale through a single API. Zero vendor lock-in — every credential is W3C VC standard-compliant.

HR & Background Verification Teams

Stop calling registrars. Verify Indian degrees, certificates, and skill credentials in under 3 seconds via the public verifier or a JSON API. For credentials issued on the network, verification cost drops to zero and turnaround drops to seconds.

Government & Public Sector

Frequently asked

What is a blockchain based academic credential verification system?+
A blockchain based academic credential verification system is software infrastructure that issues academic credentials (degrees, diplomas, certificates) as cryptographically signed digital records anchored on a public blockchain. Any third party — employer, embassy, foreign university — can verify the credential's authenticity in seconds by querying the chain directly, without contacting the issuing institution.
Why choose Gradify Labs as your blockchain based academic credential verification system company?+
Gradify Labs is an India-first, DPIIT Startup India recognised, LLP-registered company already deployed at IIIT Surat. We are built on permissionless Solana blockchain rails with W3C VC + DID standards — no vendor lock-in. We come with native NAD, ABC, DigiLocker, and NAAC integrations out of the box, with AI fraud detection and ZK privacy-preserving verification.
How is this different from a digitally signed PDF certificate?+
A signed PDF only proves the file hasn't changed since signing — and only if the verifier has the issuer's certificate chain. A blockchain credential adds public, decentralised verifiability: anyone can verify against the chain without trusting any specific server. Verification is cryptographically certain rather than dependent on certificate-authority chains.
Is a blockchain-issued academic credential legally valid in India?+
Yes. Under the Information Technology Act, 2000 (with the 2008 amendment recognising digital signatures), digitally signed credentials have the same legal weight as physical originals. Pairing the blockchain credential with mandatory NAD registration ensures it is also the UGC-recognised record.
How quickly can a university onboard?+
Institution onboarding typically takes 2–4 weeks: KYC + DID identity attestation, signing-key provisioning, NAD account setup, DigiLocker issuer onboarding (via NeGD), schema mapping, and a pilot batch. The first cohort can issue credentials within the same cycle.
Can old, paper-based degrees be migrated to the system?+
Yes. Universities routinely back-load 5–10 years of historical credentials when adopting the system. The original issuance date is preserved in the credential metadata; alumni gain instant verifiability for older degrees through the same public verifier.
Is credential verification really free?+
Yes. Verification at gradifytech.com/verifier is free, unlimited, and does not require an account. Pricing applies only to institutional issuance — see the pricing page for engagement tiers. We never charge for verification on principle; trust should not be a paid product.
Which blockchain does the system use?+
Gradify is built on Solana for on-chain credential anchoring — chosen for its high throughput (65,000+ TPS), sub-paisa transaction costs at scale, and energy-efficient proof-of-history consensus. The architecture is chain-agnostic at the credential layer (W3C VC), so credentials remain valid even if the anchor chain changes in the future.
What about student privacy under the DPDP Act?+
No personal data is written to the public chain. The on-chain record contains only a cryptographic hash and the issuer's DID. Personal data (name, programme, grades) lives in the encrypted credential held by the student. Zero-Knowledge Proofs and BBS+ selective disclosure allow verification without exposing the underlying data — fully DPDP Act 2023 and GDPR compatible.
