How to spot a fake Indian degree (without calling the registrar)

Industry studies place credential discrepancy rates in Indian CVs between 0.5% and 2% across hiring volumes. These seven checks catch the majority of fabrications in under five minutes per file.

Mark-sheet aggregate doesn't reconcile

Sum of subject marks ÷ count of subjects ≠ stated percentage. The single most common error in fabricated mark-sheets.

University-issued before the university opened

Cross-check the issue year against the university's founding year and accreditation date — both publicly available on UGC's recognised-universities list.

Programme structure doesn't match UGC norms

A 'B.Tech in 3 years' or 'M.Tech in 1 year' from a non-deemed Indian university is almost certainly fabricated. UGC programme durations are standardised.

Font and seal inconsistencies

Genuine certificates use offset printing on watermarked paper with embossed seals. Inkjet output, slightly mis-aligned text, or pixellated logos are red flags.

Roll number outside the institution's known range

Most universities publish their result archives. If the roll number falls outside the cohort's published range, the credential needs registrar confirmation.

Issued by an institution NAAC-rated lower than the programme demands

A research-track PhD from an institution without research accreditation is implausible. UGC and NAAC databases are public — check both.

No NAD record for a participating institution

UGC has progressively encouraged universities to push award results to the National Academic Depository (NAD), and adoption is growing across central, state, and deemed universities. If an institution is on the NAD participating list but a specific credential is absent, request a registrar letter before treating the document as verified.

Is this verifier really free?+

Yes. There is no charge for any verification, ever. We do not require an account, do not throttle requests, and do not log identifiable data about who is verifying what — verification is a public good and pricing it would defeat the purpose.

What if the candidate's university isn't on Gradify yet?+

The verifier will return 'credential not found in Gradify network' — which simply means the issuing institution has not onboarded. In that case, fall back to DigiLocker, the university registrar, or a BGV vendor. Send us the institution name and we'll prioritise outreach.

How does this differ from DigiLocker verification?+

DigiLocker is a citizen-facing wallet that lets the holder fetch their documents. Our verifier is a public proof-checker that anyone — without holder cooperation — can use to confirm a credential is genuine. Together they're complementary: DigiLocker is the wallet, Gradify is the proof.

Can I integrate the verifier into my hiring system?+

Yes. The verifier exposes a JSON API (free for reasonable volumes; paid plans for high-volume BGV firms). It returns a verification status, the issuer DID, the credential subject, and the cryptographic proof — everything an ATS or HRIS needs to make a pass/fail decision automatically.

How accurate is the verification?+

Cryptographic verification is mathematically certain — the credential either matches the issuer's signature on-chain or it does not. The only failure mode is operational: an institution issuing under a wrong DID, or a hash mismatch from corrupted metadata. Both are detectable and visible in the verifier output.

Will the verifier flag forged PDFs?+

Indirectly. If a candidate produces a PDF that claims to be Gradify-issued but the credential ID returns 'not found' or returns a different holder name, the discrepancy is the verification failure. We do not OCR PDFs — we check the signed proof.

Does this comply with the DPDP Act?+

Yes. The verifier consumes only the credential ID — a cryptographic identifier, not personal data. The verifier display shows information the holder has already chosen to publish via their credential. We do not retain verifier-side logs that would link a checker to a specific candidate.
